At age 18, Somyung left her home in Seoul, South Korea to study in the U.S at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. At Oberlin, Somyung has played a wide range of orchestral music under the direction of conductor Raphael Jimenez. Somyung has recorded a premiere ballet orchestra piece, Conversations with Ninjinsky for Kip Winger. Also, Somyung performed in the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra in Carnegie Hall in January 2013.
Somyung Ryu is currently studying in Oberlin Conservatory with Marilyn McDonald. Somyung has been motivated to play Violin after several mission trips to the Philippines. Somyung served the community through organizations such as teaching violin in Han-Yang University in Korea and tutoring in ASIA Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio.
Somyung enjoys working with others both as a performer and volunteer. This had led to a new gola of learning through music management. In July of 2013, Somyung will be gaining management experience at an internship in the Seoul Arts Center. After Somyung graduates from Oberlin, she plans to pursue a graduate school degree in music management. Through her pursuits, Somyung hopes to expand the reach of classical music in Korea.
